Just as in marriage, the designing of your wedding ceremony may take some compromise. Bringing together two people from different backgrounds, and sometimes different spiritual paths, may seem like a difficult challenge. Communicating with each other about what is most important for you to include, and listening to each other with open hearts, will lead to a peaceful wedding ceremony that is reflective of your individual selves and your love for each other.
You may be curious about how to create such a wedding ceremony. Even with different background and the “must haves” it is quite easy to navigate through those waters. As an Interfaith Minister, many couples come my way. Anywhere from those with strong religious backgrounds, to non-religious, earth based, spiritual or interfaith. Often times, one person is non-religious and the other has a religious background. Others have different religous backgrounds such as Catholic and Jewish, or Christian and Buddhist. We navigate through this with meaningful words which speak to both of their hearts and also add in segments which are important for them as individuals. As long as both people remain open, the flow of the ceremony will be beautiful and will provide what each person needs for their wedding ceremony to feel complete and meaningful.
However you decide to go about creating your wedding ceremony, keep your eye on what is most important which is your love and sharing your lives together. Honor each of your paths and learn about each other. The more you learn, the more you understand, and that leads to a deeper level of compassion, patience and loving compromise throughout your marriage.
